In our ‘Meet the Team’ series, we’re getting to know The Modern House staff by asking them to pick their highlights from our sales roster and 12-year-old archive. Here, we’re talking to Director of Home Sales Rosie Falconer about her favourite home libraries.

Rosie has a BA in English Literature and Politics from the University of Newcastle, and an MA in Comparative Literature from University College London. Given her studious background, we thought we’d ask Rosie to pick her favourite book-filled rooms.

The Framehouse, Rowe Lane, London E9
“I love books and I always try to navigate to their house within a home. My dream is to have a huge library if I ever get a big enough space.

“I love going to a house and seeing the owner’s collection because it’s such a quick indication of someone’s personality. There’s so much to talk about straight away.

“I watched The Framehouse being built on ‘Grand Designs’ years before I started working at The Modern House. When I joined, I found it surreal that I was showing people around this amazing space which had seemed so abstract at the time.

“The process of reading a book can be heightened by where you are and this house would certainly do that. I could happily sit for hours with a good book and the log burner crackling.”

“Home libraries are always tranquil places, and I especially think so if there is a lot of wood because it’s a living material that can make you feel quite cerebral.

“This is the perfect example of that. The volumes are amazing, as is the light, and I like the style.

“It’s so warm and feels like a proper home, without being cluttered. I think that’s the theme that unites all of the homes I’ve picked.”

Stroud II, Gloucestershire
“I loved this house because there are books everywhere! It isn’t just the living room – the studio and mezzanine level are treasure troves too. If you worked from home or just needed to escape, there are so many nook and crannies to hide in.

“I feel like you could get lost in this house. My Mum is a librarian and I’m an only child so I quite like creeping off and being quiet for a bit; I think that’s where my love of reading stems from.”

“This space has a real tranquillity which juxtaposes wonderfully against the bustling backdrop of Hackney.

“The architects who sold this have been our clients for a number of years, so it’s been really interesting to see the trajectory of things they have designed. This was their main home, and I like the way they lived in it: very stylish, obviously, but still homely.”

St Oswald’s Place, London SE11
“I liked this house from the first moment I went in there. The clients were amazing, just really sharp, funny, interesting people. They worked designing jewellery from the main studio, surrounded by all those tomes.

“The whole thing used to be a co-operative and all the other people that live in the building are amazingly creative. It wasn’t like anywhere I’d ever been before because it still had that collective spirit.”
